Golden Goldies!

Golden Retrievers are undoubtedly one of the most popular dog breeds in Australia, indeed the world, and are well known for their friendly, tolerant, and loyal nature. We certainly see many of them at Dogdayz, and they are always a staff favourite!

Interestingly, the breed was developed across more than 50 years, beginning in the 1840’s in Scotland, when aristocrat Dudley Marjoribanks (the first Lord Tweedmouth) bred his ‘Yellow Retriever’ with the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. Over several generations Irish Setters and Bloodhounds were added to the breed, in order to create the ideal gundog. All this resulted in the Golden Retriever that we know and love today.

Known for their gentle temperament, sociability and intelligence, Golden Retrievers are highly trainable, making them ideal pets and companions. Many receive further training to become assistance dogs too. Though they are very strong, making it important to get started with training when they are young!

Plenty of activity is required as they are high energy dogs, and they can become destructive without plenty of stimulation, but their social nature makes it is easy to find playmates for them. It is also worth noting that they do require regular grooming to maintain the condition of their lovely coats.

All-in-all, we give them 10/10 – would highly recommend!
